This week, we had a new member to the Makana Gardens farm: a baby lamb. It was incredible to see it as it was happening. We had an inclination that two of the mothers might have been pregnant. So, after the other baby lamb was born a few weeks back, we were just waiting to see another little one coming soon. Sheep are quite community based, I’ve learned. The whole flock stayed near when the mom was having the baby, and made sure to keep watch for a while after too.
All in all, the whole process from birth to taking his first steps, totalled roughly twenty minutes. Made me think how feeble humans seem comparatively, but how similar a relationship between mother and baby is. The baby went right for the boob too. However, the mom didn’t seem quite ready for that. It definitely looked painful for her.
A few days later, the two mom’s and their lambs were hanging out exploring all day long. I can’t wait to see the two babies play together. Ironic note: Brandon had a craving for meat, so we feasted on some lamb ribs from a ‘retired’ sheep of the same flock that evening. I had a hard time getting Elton John’s voice out of my head for a few days….specifically the song: ‘circle of life’.
